The new TarPul and the old tween

Monika Knapp of Shanti Griha rides with the village's oldest member and a small girl who's father fell to his death last year crossing on the tween

The Thumka TarPul provides much needed access to the ninety some Chepang families dwelling in the hills just north of the Prithivi highway which runs between Kathmandu and Pokhara. These tribal people depend primarily on agriculture for their livelihood, and are especially disadvantaged in terms of social status, income, education, health, and nutrition. Before the construction of the TarPul, their only means of transportation to the highway and other facilities was via an extremely dangerous tween. Just days before the contract for the TarPul was complete, an uncle of one of the village representatives fell to his death in the Trisuli River from this very tween. At the inaugurational ceremony, this man's daughter was one of the first to ride across in the new TarPul.
