| With
the generous help of CARE Nepal and a small contribution by the
local VDCs, a TarPul at Theuwatar was constructed in February 2003.
The Trisuli is one of Nepal's major bodies of water, and remains
uncrossable throughout the year. During the monsoon season, the
river swells to exceptionally dangerous levels. The villagers near
Teuwatar currently use a tween which was constructed over twenty
years ago to cross the river, and they reported 4 deaths and 20-25
injuries per year due to the unsafe crossing conditions on the tween.
In the photo, you can see several school children crossing on personal
devices that consist of no more than a single pulley and a sling
in which to sit. The only other crossing near Theuwatar lies one
hour upstream, making access to much needed facilities extremely
difficult and dangerous. An estimated 200-300 villagers and 50-60
students use this crossing daily throughout the year to reach markets,
schools and colleges, health posts, and district headquarters. |
